Not affiliated
Freakier Firmware Lab is independent. We aren’t affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Arturia or Roland. MicroFreak, BeatStep Pro and SP-404MKII are their product names, used only to say what our work runs on.
No firmware here
We don’t host, share or link any maker’s firmware. Our mods are changes that our tools apply, on your own computer, to an official firmware file you got from the maker yourself.
Use at your own risk
Changing an instrument’s firmware carries risk. A failed or interrupted update can stop an instrument from starting until it’s recovered, and in rare cases recovery may not be possible. Read the recovery guide before you begin, back up first, and only flash a build that the compatibility table lists for your firmware version.
Mods are provided as they are, without any warranty. Changing your firmware may affect the maker’s warranty on your instrument.
The simulators
The simulators are models for learning. They aren’t the instruments’ real firmware and may behave differently. Features marked Model only don’t exist on the real instrument.
Writing to your synth
The Patch Generator can write presets into your MicroFreak’s slots when you arm it and type the slot number. That overwrites whatever the slot held. The tool reads the slot first and keeps a backup in your browser, and reads the slot back after writing to check it, but the choice of slot and the decision to write are yours. Use a spare slot first. It sends only the preset messages that MIDI Control Center uses; it never sends firmware or service commands.
Your files
The tools on this site run in your browser and don’t upload the files you give them.
