Record a sequence step by step

Switch to the sequencer, record notes and rests one step at a time, and play them back.

Do it in the simulator ↗Lesson 17 · 6 min

The MicroFreak has a step sequencer with two patterns per sound, A and B, up to 64 steps long. The same button gives you the arp and the sequencer: Shift + Arp | Seq switches between them. In sequencer mode the five icons above the keys change jobs: Hold → Tie / Rest, Up → A, Order → B, Random → Record, Pattern → Play / Stop.

The steps6 steps
  1. Hold Shift and press Arp | Seq to switch to the sequencer. You are now in sequencer mode.
    Stuck?

Latch Shift by tapping it, then press Arp | Seq.

  2. With the sequence stopped, touch Record. It is the icon that was Random, marked with an O. This starts step recording.
    Stuck?

Touch the Random / Rec icon.

  3. Enter four notes: play a key, let go, play the next, and so on. Each release moves to the next step.
    Stuck?

Play and release four keys, one at a time.

  4. Enter a rest: touch Tie / Rest (the Hold icon) on its own. The step stays silent and the sequence moves on. A tie is the opposite: it carries a held note on into the next step, covered in the notes below.
    Stuck?

    Touch the Hold icon once.

  5. Touch Play (the Pattern icon) to hear the sequence loop.
    Stuck?

Touch the Pattern / Play icon.

  6. Turn Rate to change the tempo while it plays. Then touch Play again to stop.
    Stuck?

Move Rate, then touch the Play icon again.

Shift + Arp | Seq for the sequencer, Record while stopped to enter steps one at a time, Hold for a rest or a tie, Play to listen. Real-time recording and the modulation tracks are covered in the lessons after this one.

On the real MicroFreak

Step recording starts when you touch Record with the sequence stopped. Hold the notes of a step (up to four are stored) and release them all to move on one step. Touching Play partway through step recording can switch to real-time recording, so keep your fingers off the keys. Touching Tie / Rest on its own enters a rest; holding notes and touching Tie / Rest copies the notes into the next step as a tie. After the last step the sequencer switches to play by itself. Velocity is stored per step, and notes and velocity can also come from MIDI in. Pressing a key with a pattern recorded starts it without pressing Play. Play also sends MIDI clock, and Play and Stop send MIDI Start and Stop.

Where the model differs

The model records step by step, as in this lesson. Real-time recording is not modeled.

Questions2

How long is a sequence?

Sixteen steps by default. Utility > Preset > Seq/Arp > Seq Length sets it from 4 to 64, shared by A and B.

Can I play chords in the sequencer?

Yes. Hold several keys for a step and they are stored together, up to four notes, and played back as a chord in paraphonic mode.
