Scales: keep every note in key
Use the Utility menu to lock the keyboard, arp and sequences to a scale and a root note.
A scale is a set of notes that sound good together, and the root is the note it starts on. This setting makes the MicroFreak snap every note to the scale, so you cannot hit a wrong note. It affects the keyboard, arpeggiator and sequencer. The setting lives in the Utility menu: open it with the Utility button, turn the Preset knob to scroll and press it to go in.

The steps7 steps
- Press Utility to open the menu. The screen shows a list. The Preset knob now scrolls the menu instead of loading sounds.
Stuck?
Utility is the last button before the Master knob.
- The first entry is Preset: the settings saved with each sound. Press the Preset knob to go in.
Stuck?
Click the Preset knob while Preset is highlighted.
- Turn the Preset knob down to the Scale submenu (a few lines down) and press to go in.
Stuck?
Scroll down to Scale, then click.
- Inside it, scroll to the Scale line (the kind of scale; the Root Note line below sets its key note) and press to edit its value.
Stuck?
Scroll to the Scale line, then click.
- Turn to major. The choices are global (follow the Global setting), off, major, minor, harmonic minor, dorian, mixolydian, blues and pentatonic.
Stuck?
Two steps clockwise from global.
- Play a run of keys, including the black ones. With the root at C, the black keys are not in C major, so each one snaps to a nearby note that is.
Stuck?
Play any four keys, including black ones.
- Press Utility again to leave the menu.
Stuck?
Press the Utility button.
Utility > Preset > Scale holds the scale and the root note, and each sound can store its own. Choose major, minor, harmonic minor, dorian, mixolydian, blues or pentatonic, then play anything.
On the real MicroFreak
The Scale setting is saved with each preset: its choices are global, off, major, minor, harmonic minor, dorian, mixolydian, blues and penta. The value global follows the Global Scale in Utility > Global, which has its own scale and root note. The root note is any of the twelve notes. With a scale active, notes outside it are quantized, which can duplicate notes in an arp and give a ratchet effect. In a menu you scroll with the Preset knob, press to go into a submenu or to edit a value, and usually press Utility again to leave.
Questions1
I cannot find the setting.
Utility > Preset > Scale. Scale and Root Note are the two lines inside it. The Global Scale, which a sound can follow, is in Utility > Global.
