Samples on the MicroFreak: what you get

The four sample engines added in firmware 5, where samples come from, how to pick one, and what to back up first.

Do it in the simulator ↗Lesson 20 · 4 min

Firmware 5 gave the MicroFreak four sample-based oscillator types: Sample, Scan Grains, Cloud Grains and Hit Grains. They sit near the end of the Type knob, just before the vocoder. They play stored samples, so this lesson is about where samples live and how you reach them.

  • Which oscillator types play samples, and which firmware added them
  • Where samples come from and the limits on them
  • How to choose a sample on the real synth
  • What to be careful of when importing your own
The steps5 steps
  1. Look at the Type knob. Four positions near the top end are sample engines: Sample, Scan Grains, Cloud Grains and Hit Grains. After them comes the Vocoder.
  2. Samples reach the synth from your computer. In MIDI Control Center, Arturia's free app, there is a Samples tab for loading, and 52 factory samples come with firmware 5.
  3. To pick one, select a sample engine, then hold Shift and turn Type. The screen shows Smp at the top while you browse the stored samples (called slots). Do the same Shift + Type again to leave. The model has one loop and no browser, so this step is just to read.
  4. This sound uses the Sample engine on the model's loop. Play a few notes to hear a sample played from the keys.
    Stuck?

Click a few keys or press A, S and D.

  5. Before you import anything on a real unit: back up your presets and samples in MIDI Control Center. Press Next.

Four engines, one pool of samples, chosen with Shift + Type, loaded from your computer. The next two lessons use the model's built-in loop to teach the knobs of each engine.

On the real MicroFreak

The synth holds 128 samples, 210 seconds in total, stored as 16-bit, 32 kHz mono, and any sample over 24 seconds is cut. Arturia ships 52 factory samples with firmware 5. You bring your own in with Arturia's MIDI Control Center app, which has a Samples tab. To choose which sample an engine plays, select a sample engine, then hold Shift and turn Type: the screen shows Smp at the top while you browse, and the same gesture leaves the browser. The sample slot can also be an Assign destination and can be recorded in a sequence's modulation track. Back up your presets and samples in MIDI Control Center before you start.

Where the model differs

The model has one built-in drum loop and plays it in all four sample engines. It does not model the sample browser, the 128 slots or loading, but its Start, Length, Loop, Scan, Density and Chaos knobs behave as described.

Questions2

Do I need firmware 5 for samples?

Yes. The sample oscillators arrived with firmware 5, together with the Samples tab in MIDI Control Center and a larger preset bank.

Can I record samples on the MicroFreak itself?

The sample engines play samples loaded from your computer. The microphone input is used by the vocoder engine, not for sampling.
