Freakier Firmware

A tour of the panel

The main sections of the MicroFreak's panel in order, with what each control does. No tasks: just rings on the model.

Do it in the simulator ↗Lesson 2 · 4 min

The MicroFreak is small, but it is laid out like a path: sound is made on the left, goes right through the filter, and the controls underneath shape how it moves. This tour just points at things. Press Next to go on.

  • Where the main controls are and which section each belongs to
  • The signal path: digital oscillator, analog filter, analog amplifier
  • That Shift gives many controls a second job
The steps8 steps · a tour
  1. The screen shows the preset name and category, and names whatever you touch. The Preset knob beside it browses sounds; Save stores them; Utility opens the settings menu.
  2. The Matrix is a grid of 35 lights: five modulation sources by seven destinations. It is how one control moves another. The white knob beside it moves around and edits it.
  3. The four knobs together are the oscillator section. Type picks one of the digital engines, and Wave, Timbre and Shape change the sound of whichever one it picked.
  4. Next, the analog filter: Cutoff and Resonance, and a button that steps through low-pass, band-pass and high-pass.
  5. The cycling envelope is a second envelope that can also repeat like an LFO. Its button picks Env, Run or Loop; Rise, Fall, Hold and Amount shape it.
  6. The envelope on the bottom row shapes each note: Attack, Decay/Release and Sustain, plus Filter Amt for how much it opens the filter. Amp Mod decides whether it also shapes the volume.
  7. The LFO has a shape button and a Rate knob. The arpeggiator and sequencer share a button and a Rate knob too, with Oct | Mod beside them.
  8. Just above the keys are eight touch icons (Hold, four arp modes, Spice, Dice, Bend) and a touch strip. Shift, on the bottom row, gives many controls a second job printed in blue. In these lessons Shift + X means hold Shift while you use X. On the model, tap Shift once to keep it on (tap again to let go), or hold your computer's Shift key.

That is the main layout. The Beginner lessons now take each one in turn and have you use it.

On the real MicroFreak

The whole signal path on the real synth is a digital oscillator into a 12 dB per octave analog filter into an analog amplifier, with a single mono output. The sound-shaping knobs are endless encoders, so a knob's position does not have to match the sound after a preset loads.

Questions1

Are the knobs fixed-position pots?

No. The sound-shaping knobs are endless encoders, so after loading a preset the knob may not point at the stored value. The Panel button and the Knob catch setting in the Utility menu decide how a knob joins the sound.
