MIDI, clock and CV: connecting it to other gear
The connections on the back, the MIDI and sync settings in Utility, and what the CV outputs send.
The MicroFreak talks to computers and other instruments three ways: USB (which can also power it), MIDI on small 3.5 mm sockets, and CV, gate and pressure outputs for modular gear. It can send and receive clock so patterns stay in time.

The steps4 steps
- The back panel has the audio and headphone outputs, USB, MIDI in and out, clock in and out, and the CV, gate and pressure outputs. Press Next.
- Open Utility, find Global with the Preset knob and press, then find MIDI and press. This is where channels and destinations are set.
Stuck?
Press Utility, scroll to Global, press, scroll to MIDI, press.
- The model shows a few of these lines. On the real synth you also find output destination, Thru, knob CC sending and Merge. Press Utility to leave.
Stuck?
Press the Utility button.
- Sync (in Global) picks the clock source and format. CV/Gate sets pitch, gate and pressure formats. The CV pitch output carries one note: the last key you played. Press Next.
USB for a computer, MIDI cables for other synths, CV for modulars, and the settings for each live in Utility > Global.
On the real MicroFreak
The MicroFreak has a 6.35 mm main output (TS or TRS), a 3.5 mm headphone output, USB, MIDI in and out on 3.5 mm sockets (use the MIDI adapters that come with it for standard 5-pin gear), 3.5 mm clock in and out, and CV outputs for pitch, gate and pressure. The headphone socket is also the microphone input for the vocoder. In Utility > Global > MIDI you set the input and output channels, the output destination (none, USB, MIDI or both), Local on or off, Arp/Seq MIDI out, Thru (passes incoming MIDI on to the output), whether knobs send CCs, and Merge (mixes incoming MIDI with the MicroFreak's own). Sync sets the source (internal, USB, MIDI, Clock or Auto), the clock format and Global Tempo. CV/Gate sets pitch format (1V/oct, Hz/V or 1.2V/oct: the voltage standards modular gear uses for pitch), gate format and pressure range. Pitch CV carries a single note: the last key played, or the lowest note of a sequence step.
Questions2
What does Local Off do?
Local Off disconnects the keyboard from the MicroFreak's own sound, so a computer can route the notes back. People use it to avoid doubled notes in a DAW.
Can it run from USB?
Yes, the MicroFreak can be powered by USB. For firmware updates Arturia recommends using its power supply as well.
