Assign: send a source to any knob

Point an Assign column at the filter, resonance or almost any other parameter, then route a source to it.

Do it in the simulator ↗Lesson 13 · 5 min

The first four destination columns are fixed: Pitch, Wave, Timbre and Cutoff. The other three, Assign 1, 2 and 3, can point at almost any knob. You choose the target by holding the Assign button and turning the knob you want. After that, every source in that column goes to that parameter.

  • What the three Assign columns are for
  • How to point an Assign column at a knob
  • How to route a source to that column
  • What cannot be assigned
The steps6 steps
  1. Hold Assign 1 and turn Cutoff. (On the model, click Assign 1 once, then turn Cutoff.) Assign 1 now belongs to the filter cutoff.
    Stuck?

Click the Assign 1 button, then drag the Cutoff knob.

  2. Select LFO to Assign 1: third row, fifth column. It is the column you just set up.
    Stuck?

From the start, Counting along the rows, LFO to Assign 1 is point 19.

  3. Press the knob and turn the amount past 25. The LFO now moves the filter cutoff through Assign 1.
    Stuck?

Click the Matrix knob, then turn it.

  4. Hold a note and turn LFO Rate. The filter wobbles at the speed you set. This is the same result as LFO to Cutoff, but the column is free to point anywhere.
    Stuck?

Hold a key and turn LFO Rate.

  5. Re-point the column: hold Assign 1 and turn Resonance. The same LFO connection now moves resonance instead.
    Stuck?

Click Assign 1, then turn Resonance.

  6. Play and listen: the whistle at the cutoff now rises and falls by itself. Remember what cannot be assigned: Master Volume, the Preset knob, Shift jobs and every button.
    Stuck?

    Play a couple of notes.

Hold Assign, turn a knob, and the column belongs to that parameter until you point it elsewhere. Then set amounts in the matrix like any other column. That is how you get the LFO onto resonance, or the cycling envelope onto the arp rate.

On the real MicroFreak

On the real synth you hold the Assign button and turn the knob. You can also assign a whole column to a matrix point's amount, to a Sample slot (enter the sample menu, use an Assign button while turning Type) or to Unison Spread (hold Assign and push Paraphonic). The Master Volume knob, the Preset knob, anything on Shift, and every button and icon cannot be assigned.

Where the model differs

The model lets you click Assign once instead of holding it, so a mouse user can then turn a knob. It does not model assigning to a matrix point's amount or to a sample slot.

Questions2

Which parameters can I assign?

Glide, oscillator type, wave, timbre and shape, cutoff and resonance, the envelope's attack, decay, sustain and filter amount, LFO rate, arp and sequencer rate, the four cycling envelope knobs, the sample slot and matrix amounts.

Do the Assign columns apply to every voice?

In paraphonic mode an assigned destination applies to all voices. A voice-based source such as Env, Press or Key/Arp still gives each voice its own value on Type, Wave, Timbre and Shape. The filter is shared.
